Based on what she believed to be insider information, she impulsively diverted $10000 from the Red Cross charity she hosted as a stock tip. When she realized she had lost her money, she desperately sought help from a Japanese ivory merchant whom she had been flirting with and persuading to exchange the money for a job. When her husband's long-awaited business deal finally came true, she desperately tried to withdraw from their agreement by replacing the money. He was angry and disappointed that she refused his love, so he marked her shoulder as his property with a branded device. Edith felt violated and fired a shot in his shoulder before leaving.
